90% Of Your Marketing Dollars Go Down the Toilet!

Very few small business owners take the time to properly plan a marketing strategy for their business. In fact, for most businesses, 90% of their money and time is wasted on so called marketing. Why, because when they think about marketing, they put an advertisement in the paper, someone says you should be on Facebook so they go on Facebook, they arrange a website and may send out thousands of flyers. Only to end up with no calls. Does this sound like you?

Marketing needs to be planned using the following steps;

Understand what you do best and what is unique about your business
Who your current “A Grade” customers are? What are their characteristics?
What are the needs, wants & issues of your “A Grade” customers?
What is your solution to solve their needs, wants & issues?
Where do your “A Grade” customers get together en-masse?
How will I get my message to them?
What will my message be? What will make them call me?
How will I handle their enquiries?
What is my sales process?
Your marketing needs to be planned in two streams,

To your current customer base, increasing their return rate and the amount of dollars they spend with you. It is six times cheaper to market to your own customer base.

Marketing for new business, this should have two streams as well, Broad base marketing, Targeted marketing.
Another key to successful marketing is having a plan of how many marketing avenues you have that are designed to target your prospects. You need multiple avenues that point to your target, they could be, networking, website, referrals, direct marketing, blogs, Facebook, advertising, telephone, fax or many more different strategies. Your marketing program needs to use 10 of these avenues in a planned sequence that has your prospect seeing you from different directions on a continuous basis without being annoying.

You need to go through the steps above before you even think about taking action, if you go through these steps properly; you can plan what your 10 avenues of attack are. There’s no point jumping on Facebook or advertising or if your prospects don’t use Facebook or read the products you advertise in. Don’t just go with what someone tells you, do the research and plan, you will get a better result.

How to Use Your Mobile Phone for Direct Sales Marketing

Many people spend many countless of hours driving from one location to another. Others spend a good amount waiting – either in the car or on-site. You can either use your smartphone to kill time or use it productively to build your direct sales business while on the go.

Having a mobile phone with data can keep you in the loop for urgent emails; follow up on a new lead, or touch base with a new customer base. Using mobile to build your business is another way to reach and connect with potential customers and meet them wherever they are. This is important because not everyone sits at home but if your target audience has mobile data and you do too, it’s a great way to reach them, while they’re on the go.

Here’s what Ziamond, an online jewelry company, has to say about mobile marketing:

“Mobile users were making purchases from their mobile devices and we wanted to make their mobile shopping experience faster, easier and better. ”

If you’re working with a hot lead, you can respond as soon as possible. If there’s an issue with a team member or an unhappy customer, You can take care of it sooner rather than later.

Today’s iPhone gives me the flexibility to build a business while on the go and instantly. This could be the difference between signing up a new customer or not because people want answers quickly.

If you come in contact with a potential client who has a mobile smartphone, instead of handing out a business card or brochure, try to have them check your website.

Granted this doesn’t happen often but being able to gauge their level of interest on the spot allows you to talk about it in the moment. In the past, they may or may not have checked out your website on their own or bother to call.

People get busy, lose interest, and move on to the next thing that catches their attention.

Even if your prospects don’t have mobile data but most likely has a phone and texting option. Texting is an alternate option to follow up and stay in touch with your prospects faster.

Not everyone reads their emails right away and sometimes they end up in the spam folder. Texting is another option to reach your prospects in addition to emails or phone calls.

Reaching people by phone can be time consuming and some people don’t like being called on. Others prefer getting a text or email to remind me of any upcoming event than a phone call.

These days, it’s common practice to Google the person’s name, company, or whatever I need and more often than not, while on the go. There’s no doubt mobile marketing has grown significantly in recent years:

“ABI Research says sales increase to $3.4 billion this year from $1.4 billion in 2009.”

It’s convenient and saves time because a lot of times your clients are not at home which means you’re more likely to reach me them on mobile.

There are so many ways to use your mobile to build your business while on the go. You can quickly text a message to remind your hostess about an upcoming party or your potential recruit about an opportunity call. More companies are adding shopping apps to make mobile shopping even easier.

Why Your Small Business Marketing Success Depends on Matt Damon

Do you like movies?

I do.

My favorite movie is Good Will Hunting starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Mini Driver because I like the idea that a guy pushing a broom at MIT is an undiscovered genius.

Come to think of it…

How many other people have extraordinary talent, but for one reason or another, they hide their genius from the world?

(We’ll never know…)

But anyways, this sums up Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting to a “T”.

And my favorite scene in Good Will Hunting is the “bar scene” when Ben Affleck is laying lines on the stunning Mini Driver. And just as the tangy words leave Affleck’s mouth, a bully from Harvard starts giving Affleck a hard time.

Enter Matt Damon.

…Who decides to slay this bully with a few witty phrases that demonstrate his superior intelligence, and leave Affleck’s bully with a “mental wedgie”.

But here’s the cool part:

As Matt Damon’s walking out of the bar, he spots the downtrodden bully. And since he snagged Mini Driver’s number, he takes it out of his pocket. He holds it up to the glass window so the bully can see it. And he utters the classic line…

“I got her number. How do you like dem’ apples?”

Every time, I hear this line I get goose bumps.

Guess you could say I like underdogs.

But what’s the marketing lesson here?

When you own a small business, you can make decisions fast. As a result you can test as many direct response marketing campaigns as your beady little brain can create.

Do you think big companies have this luxury?

No way.

They have to call a meeting. Get everyone to agree on an idea. They have to run their idea past the lawyers. Their lawyers have to sign off.

Meanwhile…

You can launch a dozen campaigns to their one, simply because you’re light and lean.

And guess what you do when you get yourself a winner?

You hold your results up, and you boldly proclaim:

“How do you like dem’ apples?”

And let me tell you…

There is no better feeling then when you have yourself a marketing winner you can use time and time again to ring sales. It’s magical. And I suggest you crawl on broken glass to acquire this skill. Because it’ll allow you to dominate your competition just like Matt Damon gave his bar bully a serious beat-down.

So if I were in your shoes, here’s a simple marketing plan I’d follow:

Create at least 5 direct response marketing campaigns a month.
Test each of your marketing campaigns.
Look at your results carefully, and continue using any campaign that puts new customers, clients or patients into your business for at least a break-even cost.
Stack your marketing campaigns on top of each other. So at the end of three to six months, you can have a dozen to two dozen promotions you can count on to ring your cash register.
